The UK government is working on options for greening natural gas, Telegraph reported.
Natural gas could be green for investors, British media point out. The Independent added that Entrepreneurship Minister Kwazi Kwarteng will attract businesses to drill gas wells in the North Sea.
This project, however, has already met with stiff resistance from environmental activists. Experts specify that the extraction and combustion of blue fuel increase carbon dioxide emissions. At the same time, back in 2021, the European Commission called gas a “transitional fuel”.
Representatives of Green New Deal Rising and Stop Cambo on Friday, May 13, protested against extreme prices for gas and electricity. They recalled that the energy company Shell makes a profit of 7 billion pounds, and people are forced to choose between paying for a communal apartment or buying food.
“Shell’s profits” are put “over people’s lives,” Green New Deal Rising said.
“You are lying to the British public. You are trying to make us believe that we will be safe by developing new oil and gas fields. But in reality, you are trapping us in the energy system and destroying our future. The climate crisis will destroy our future,” one of the activists declared.
The authorities, however, try to ignore the protests. Kwarteng has already commented on the statements of the Greens on the social network Twitter.
“Scream all you want, but I will not jeopardize the UK’s energy security by shutting down domestic oil and gas production. We will need oil and natural gas for decades to come. Either we get more of what we need from the North Sea, or we import more from abroad,” the politician stressed.
The energy crisis is growing in the UK against the background of large-scale anti-Russian sanctions and the withdrawal of resources from the Russian Federation.
