Microsoft, the world’s largest software firm, has inked a long-term renewable energy arrangement with Amplus Solar, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Petronas oil and gas corporation, Power Technology reported.
Microsoft will acquire power from a 100MW solar project being developed by Amplus in the Indian state of Rajasthan under the terms of the agreement.
The agreement is part of Microsoft’s plan to become a carbon-neutral company by 2030.
To achieve this goal, the corporation has committed to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2025, including data centers, buildings, and campuses.
The managing director for Microsoft Malaysia K Raman said that the announcement further expands the companies’ long-standing cooperation, which now stretches to sustainable business transformation.
He went on to say that this strategic alliance will not only help the company achieve its own sustainability goals but will also allow them to use cutting-edge digital technology to assist Petronas in its transition to a more sustainable future.
To support Petronas’ ambitions to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the two firms will work to create an intelligent platform that will be powered by data and artificial intelligence (AI).
Bacho Pilong, the senior vice-president of Petronas Project Delivery and Technology said that their partnership with Microsoft, which is one of the world’s biggest corporate buyers of renewable energy, is proof of the innovation-driven initiatives and the company’s commitment to enabling businesses to achieve their sustainability goals.
He continued that the two companies have a shared commitment to use digitalization and technology to accomplish sustainability’s triple bottom line of people, planet, and profit.
Pilong also said that there is hope that this synergy will encourage and catalyze greater cross-industry collaboration in order to collectively create a better future.
Microsoft and Ørsted announced a deal in August to buy renewable energy from Old 300, a 430MWAC solar energy center in Fort Bend County, Texas.
The Old 300 Solar Centre is a $400 million project located in Needville on 2,800 acres of privately held property.
