The energy crisis in the UK will last for several years, and solving problems will require drastic measures from the government, the head of the United Kingdom Foreign Office, Liz Truss said.
Truss wants to be the leader of the ruling Conservative Party and the country’s prime minister after the resignation of Boris Johnson.
“If people think that the problem will be solved within six months, then they are wrong. This is a long-term problem,” – said the head of the British Foreign Office, speaking at a meeting with members of the Conservative Party in Norwich.
According to Truss, in light of the abandonment of Russian hydrocarbons, the UK needs to resume the development of new oil and gas fields in the North Sea, accelerate the pace of construction of nuclear power plants, and more actively switch to renewable energy sources.
She added that if she is elected Prime Minister, she is ready to revive the British economy by reducing taxation and creating a more favorable environment for doing business.
Sky News on Thursday, citing the results of a public opinion poll conducted by the sociological service Ipsos, said that about a third of UK residents are experiencing difficulties with paying their electricity bills even before the tariff increase planned for the fall.
Earlier, the London-based Center for Economic and Business Research published a report warning that the UK risks facing the most significant drop in living standards since the 1950s.
