Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called for the increased use of solar energy and to increase the share of power in the country derived from renewable sources, local media reported.
“On the longest day of the summer solstice in 2022, let us reflect for a moment on how much more we can use solar energy as part of renewable energy sources. I applaud those who are putting this into practice,” the president said.
At meetings with the National Innovation Council, the head of state pointed to Cuba’s potential in using renewable energy sources.
According to him, it is necessary to strive for Cuba to reach one hundred percent of electricity production from renewable sources.
Cuban experts say that given the difficulties caused by the US embargo, the cheapest way to generate electricity is to use energy generated by sunlight. According to them, Cuba could potentially get up to 150 kilowatts/hour per square meter per month.
Cuba will host a Renewable Energy Fair from June 22 to 24. The event aims to promote the efficient use of renewable energy in the industrial, service, and residential sectors and obtain foreign investment for Cuban energy projects.
Cuba is currently experiencing a difficult situation due to accidents at several thermal power plants, leading to shortages in electricity generation.
