Members of the European Parliament supported the proposal of the European Commission to list nuclear energy and the combustion of natural gas as environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources.
Therefore, nuclear and gas power plants will be included in the list of taxonomic objects.
This was supported by the majority of parliamentarians – the taxonomics brings together projects that do not harm the climate while investing in taxes.
The European Union has long planned to achieve zero emissions by 2050. During the transitional period, the EU authorities allow nuclear reactors and gas facilities to be used.
It is believed that they do not emit much carbon dioxide. Ecologists said that under this initiative is hidden the inability of European countries to meet environmental goals on time.
The taxonomy is most actively supported by France and Germany. Both nuclear and gas-fired power plants are located in these countries, Euronews reports.
While EU countries are abandoning Russian hydrocarbons and switching to environmentally friendly renewable energy sources (RES), they have to burn more coal. At the same time, Europe has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.
EU climate chief Frans Timmermans acknowledged that the use of coal would harm emissions. But at the same time, he hopes for the rapid development of renewable energy.
