According to preliminary information, there is a potential of 9,200 megawatts of solar and wind energy, as well as future of hydropower projects in the liberated territory of Nagorno Karabakh in Azerbaijan, local media reported.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev discussed these renewable energy opportunities during a meeting with participants of the international conference called “South Caucasus: Development and Cooperation”.
“A 20-megawatt plant has already been put into operation, another 25-megawatt capacities will be commissioned this year, but these are only hydroelectric power plants, hydropower has even more potential here.” Aliyev stated.
When it comes to solar and wind energy in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijani authorities are now in the final stages of negotiations with BP on constructing a solar power plant with a capacity of 240 megawatts in Jebrail.
“We are also discussing with international companies the creation of 100 megawatt capacities in Kalbajar. In addition, we had two groundbreaking ceremonies for solar and wind power plants with a total capacity of 430 megawatts, which are being built by Saudi Arabian companies Aquapower and UAE Mazdar,” the head of the Azerbaijani state said.
