Japanese Minister of Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura promised to do everything possible to ensure a stable energy supply and to the country and its energy security, Japanese TV channel NHK reported.
The minister spoke to reporters after Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and relevant ministers met to discuss Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Nishimura said that he informed the head of government about the situation on Sakhalin, after which Kishida instructed him to make every effort to ensure a stable supply of energy resources.
Nishimura noted that Russia had asked Japanese trading houses to report by September 4 whether they would be ready to sign an agreement to supply gas from the Russian Sakhalin-2 field. The minister noted that the government will firmly cooperate with trading houses on this issue.
He also noted that he intends to use such energy sources as nuclear power plants, renewable energy sources, as well as thermal energy to meet the needs of the country.
According to the forecast, Japan may face a shortage of energy capacity this winter.
