More cities in US transitioning to 100% renewable energy

In January, the California city of Hawthorne voted decisively for 100 percent renewable energy as their default rate, while Hermosa Beach opted to join the Clean Power Alliance, owing in part to the chapter’s Clean Break team’s campaigning, angeles.sierraclub.org writes. Buena Park, the inaugural member of the Orange County Power Authority, is the first city in Orange County to make 100 percent renewable energy its default.

By opting for 100 percent renewable energy, municipal officials are recognizing the critical role that Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) programs play in further decreasing city GHG emissions. So far, almost 200 cities throughout the US have pledged to use 100 percent renewable energy as part of the Sierra Club’s “Ready for 100” campaign. Beverly Hills, Redondo Beach, and Los Angeles County have opted to make 100 percent renewable energy the default rate starting in 2022. More than 2 million individuals in Los Angeles and Ventura counties will have access to 100 percent renewable energy by the end of this year!

“Through the Clean Power Alliance (CPA), the Sierra Club’s campaigning and leadership have been vital in getting additional towns and counties to boost their renewable energy default rate to 100 percent,” stated local Sierra Club activist David Haake. “As a consequence, CPA will deliver 100 percent renewable energy to more than 2 million people by the end of 2022, making CPA the biggest supplier of renewable energy in the United States.”

Huntington Beach and Fullerton are two more localities that are contemplating switching to 100 percent renewable energy in February. The next three years will be the most pivotal in our history. The choices we make now will be essential in ensuring a healthy and sustainable energy future for everybody.
