Shell Nederland B.V. and Shell Overseas Investments B.V. have decided to build the largest green hydrogen plant in Europe by 2025, the company said in a statement.
Shell Nederland B.V. and Shell Overseas Investments B.V., subsidiaries of Shell, have made the final investment decision to build Holland Hydrogen I, which will be Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant when commissioned in 2025.
The green hydrogen plant, which will be located in the port of Rotterdam, will operate a 200 MW electrolyzer. It is expected that the plant will produce up to 60 tons of hydrogen per day.
The company says the cell will be powered by an offshore wind farm. The hydrogen will be delivered to Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam via a pipeline, where it will replace some of the so-called gray hydrogen (produced mainly from fossil energy) used at the refinery.
The company claims that this will partially decarbonize the production of energy products such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
As hydrogen-powered heavy-duty vehicles enter the market and filling stations for them expand, an increase in the hydrogen supply will also help reduce harmful emissions from the operation of commercial vehicles.
