Japanese company Honda said it is working on a system that should make the moon habitable for humans.
The system will supply oxygen for breathing, hydrogen for fuel and electricity for a range of applications. Honda added that the US wants to return to the moon by 2024, and that the country is currently engaged in the Artemis program.
As part of the project, Honda is conducting joint research with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and together they want to create a renewable energy system based on the recycling process.
Such a system could use sunlight and water to produce oxygen for breathing and recycle it, as well as to generate electricity and hydrogen energy. A high-pressure drop water electrolysis system will be used. Water will split into hydrogen and oxygen.
The system is lightweight and compact in size, and also easy to maintain. The height of the entire high-pressure water electrolysis system is only 980mm, the company pointed out.
