QatarEnergy, QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions, and Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO) have signed agreements to build the world’s largest Ammonia-7 plant, the first in the Blue Ammonia project.
The new plant will be located in the industrial city of Mesaid. The plant’s capacity will be 1.2 million tons of blue ammonia annually, making it the world’s largest such facility. The planned launch date is the first quarter of 2026.
The announcement was made during a ceremony held at QatarEnergy headquarters in Doha to sign project agreements, including an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract.
An EPC contract worth approximately $1 billion has been awarded to a consortium of ThyssenKrupp and the Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC).
Commenting on the event, the Minister of State for Energy, President and CEO of QatarEnergy, said: “Ammonia-7 is a landmark project for Qatar and for the industry as a whole. It is based on our experience in operating and maintaining ammonia plants for fertilizer production. We also build on our unique position in renewable energy and carbon capture and sequestration, as well as our ideal logistical capabilities and advantages to deliver differentiated low-carbon products and fuels worldwide.”
Blue ammonia is produced by capturing and storing CO2 from conventional ammonia production. Blue ammonia can be transported on traditional ships and used in power plants to produce low-carbon electricity.
