Algeria is working on new green energy transition legislation as the government aims to support the transition in all its aspects, the country’s Renewable Energy Minister Benattou Ziane said.
In his speech at a meeting of the Algerian Confederation of Civilian Employers (CAPC) in the capital, Ziane assured that the country wants to achieve a smooth and secure green energy transition based on economic efficiency and diversity of sources.
To ensure its energy security in the long term, Algeria is seeking to develop a new energy model that will help it overcome the challenges the country is facing due to the rapid structural changes in the global energy sector, the minister said.
According to Zian, the new energy model should be based on the principle of diversifying energy sources, transport technologies, financing methods, international partners, and diversifying markets.
The Algerian government is currently awaiting proposals for a tender for solar power plants with a total capacity of 1 GW, which attracted interest from 111 investors by mid-May. The auction aims to distribute power in lots from 50 MW to 300 MW in five provinces of the country.
Algeria has a vast potential for generating energy using solar power plants since the Sahara desert extends over a large part of the country’s territory.
