The German Ministry of Economic and Climate will present new measures to develop renewable energy, Reuters reported.
Berlin decided to speed up its work against the need to reduce dependence on Russian gas.
The parties in the ruling coalition agreed last year on goals related to energy transformation. Still, with the onset of the Ukrainian crisis, the green transition has become a more pressing issue.
In the following days, the Minister of Economy will present several proposals to change the legislation, two sources in the government specify.
Thus, one of the provisions is to recognize the use of renewable energy sources (RES) in the interests of public safety. German Finance Minister Christian Lindner has already called
RES-generation “energy of freedom”.
Amendments to the legislation suggest setting a goal for the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix at 80 percent by 2030, which is 15 percentage points higher than previously thought, sources told Reuters.
By the end of the decade, the capacity of offshore wind farms should reach at least 30 gigawatts, which can be considered the equivalent of 10 nuclear power plants. By 2045, they want to bring the figure to at least 70 gigawatts.
Other proposals to change laws are expected later in the year, primarily to increase the energy efficiency of buildings and reduce emissions in the transport sector, Reuters sources say.
The issue of energy security for Germany, which is mainly dependent on Russian gas supplies, became relevant after the start of Russia’s operation in Ukraine and the sanctions that followed.
While they do not concern gas imports, Russia itself may decide to stop deliveries if the European partners do not accept its terms for payment using foreign currency and ruble accounts in Gazprombank.
